Responsibilities Every day when I walked into the office, I did not know what to expect to be doing that day. Somedays were spent getting agendas ready for board meetings or writing minutes from past meetings. Other days were spent Gathering site information for a perspective business coming into town. I spent many days out in the field talking to business owners or potential business owners. I spent a lot of my time organizing documents and payments made by the business owners that the GEDC funded. Job Description: Work along side the President/CEO of the Gonzales Economic Development Corporation to provide leadership and planning, development, facilitation and implementation of federal, state and local programs pertaining to Community/Economic Development, Tourism Development and Gonzales Main Street Program. Qualifications: A background or degree in Community or Economic Development is required for this position. Strong written and verbal communication skills are a must. You must be able to work independently, and be able to contribute in meetings and conversations. Benefits: This position pays $500 per 100 hours clocked, although I will end up having over the required 400 hours. Room and board is not provided for this position. It worked out well for me because I lived at my parents' house this summer while completing my internship. Throughout the summer I have been introduced to many people in my community and across the state of Texas, who I will be able to use as resources for the rest of my career. Achievements My internship with the Gonzales Economic Development Corporation has been one of the most valuable experiences of my life. This summer has exceeded my expectations in all areas. Through this internship, I have gotten a feel for what the real world will look like for me. This summer I worked along side with the Mayor, City Manager, City Secretary, City Engineer, and the Chief of Police. I participated in all city staff meetings, GEDC board meetings and council meetings during my internship. I learned something new at each meeting I attended. One of the special projects I participated in was building a new website for the GEDC. I was included in the design process, and the content creation portion of the website project. I participated in weekly website meetings with the design team and I was able to contribute my creative thoughts and ideas. The new website is set to launch August 18, 2016. |
